Semi-vortices and cluster-vorticity: new concepts in the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition

چکیده
The Berezinski˘ı-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) essential phase transition in the 2d XY model is revisited. Its mechanism usually described by (un)binding of vortex–anti-vortex (V–AV) pairs, which does, however, not provide a clear-cut quantitative criterion for criticality. Known sharp criteria are divergence correlation length and discontinuity helicity modulus. Here we propose probe new criterion: it based on concepts semi-vortices cluster vorticity, formulated framework multi-cluster algorithm that use to simulate

Introduction to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition
This essay examines the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thousless transition in the two-dimensional XY model. It is an imporant example of phase transitions occuring without an ordered phase or symmetry breaking, and introduced topological ideas into the concerns of condensed matter physicists.

متن کاملThe XY Model and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Phase Transition
In statistical physics, the XY model in two dimensions provides the paradigmatic example of phase transitions mediated by topological defects (vortices). Over the years, a variety of analytical and numerical methods have been deployed in an attempt to fully understand the nature of its transition, which is of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type. These met with only limited success until it...
متن کاملBerezinskii-kosterlitz-thouless Transition in Josephson Junction Arrays
The quantum XY model shows a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition between a phase with quasi long-range order and a disordered one, like the corresponding classical model. The effect of the quantum fluctuations is to weaken the transition and eventually to destroy it. However, in this respect the mechanism of disappearance of the transition is not yet clear. In this work we address ...
